Letter regarding Interim Pastor (August 14, 2016)

REV. DR. Layne Smith, Interim transitional minister

Layne Smith Layne Smith has been involved in ministry at various churches for over 36 years. He was ordained by Royal Lane Baptist Church in Dallas, TX while he served as their Youth Minister in 1979. He next served as the Minister of Education for Second Baptist Church in Liberty, MO (a position in which our former minister Connie Stinson was called to replace him). He was then Pastor of Rolling Hills Baptist Church in Fayetteville, AR for over 15 years and Senior Pastor of Viewmont Baptist Church in Hickory, NC for over 11 years.
In 2007, Dr. Smith pursued training to become an Intentional Interim Minister to help guide churches as they transition from one pastor to another. He has served at 4 different churches in this capacity and has been very successful in helping those churches embrace their identity, create a pastor profile and enable a search committee to quickly and effectively find their new pastor. In his most recent call, he served for almost 12 months at Royal Lane Baptist Church (Dallas, TX). He finished at that church in June and they were able to call their new pastor just a few weeks after he left. Office: 703-356-8088 or 703-356-8080 ex. 103

Reverend Katie Morgan-Harper, Minister of Spiritual Formation and Outreach

Katie Morgan Katie was born and raised in Etowah, Tennessee. She graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan College in 2010 and received her Master of Divinity Degree from Duke Divinity School in 2013.
Katie's background has been diverse in that she did not select to serve in ministry within the church right after her formal seminary training, although she was offered several ministerial staff positions. Instead, her spiritual calling led her to serve in the public school system as Director of English as a Second Language program. Also, she helped churches and other civic organizations identify the needs of the community's and led by providing support and aid where it was most needed. She created a coalition of churches that assisted with feeding the homeless students and providing aid to victims of disasters. She led in ministering to immigrants by connecting them to the community and helping students and families with basic life needs like clothing, food and shelter.
Katie also has a love and passion for teaching children. Having served previously as a part-time Minister to Children, she enjoys children's creativity and imagination. She is full of wonderful ideas on how to provide intergenerational Christian education with adults and children. Her approach to Christian education is full of creative ideas and expressions including learning about God through an active lifestyle, worshiping God through our bodies and experiencing new ways of active bible living.
Katie has demonstrated her dedication, desire and willing spirit to come to McLean by reaching out and learning the most she could about our church through reading the Vision Task Force summary, watching previous sermons on our website and understanding our church's direction, mission and purpose. She thoughtfully prepared questions for our committee and took a deep interest in connecting with us far beyond the interviews and time we spent together. She has done her homework in making sure this is the right fit for her and that her passion, talents and skills would be utilized.
Welcome Katie! We can't wait to see how God is going to use you to minister to the McLean Baptist Church family and our community.
